First, I'll establish my bona fides: Chinese-Canadian whose father was a gourmet chef; grew up in Chinatown Toronto; past gastronomic tourist in China. I know my Chinese food. By Ottawa standards, this restaurant serves up authentic Chinese dishes at decent quality and prices. I won't comment on North American Chinese food, but the real deal is on their dine-in menu (unfortunately, a lot is untranslated into English but demand to know what it is!). The bad news is, their service is authentically Chinese too. That bad. Slow, unfriendly, impersonal. For example, after many years, the female co-owner never once uttered a word to us to say hello, thank you, come again, except when there was a price dispute and she vigorously woke up in attack mode. So much for customer loyalty. If you're Caucasian, you can expect quicker and friendlier service, and that woman and her husband may actually talk to you. If you have young children, expect to be segregated at a table in the back corner; kids just aren't welcome here. Bottom line: come if you're desperate for real Chinese food in the east end otherwise stay away.
I go here often just for the soup. It's hot/tangy but out of this world! It isn't on the dinner menu, ask for the beef noodle soup off the lunch menu. It's a big bowl with lots of beef and large noodles. Unless you're a VERY hearty eater you'll have trouble finishing the bowl of soup, it's quite substantial. We always have leftovers. To me and my Chinese friend's tastes, the best noodle soup in Ontario!
The food was quick. But the won ton soup container was half full when we received it & there was 2 pieces of wonton & 1 piece of pork. The vegetable stiry- we asked for no celery & told them one of us we're allergic- & they gave us ALOT of celery (That was most of the vegetables) - & I had asked for extra brocoli & they said they would have to charge us for extra brocoli & we said okay- We never got extra brocoli but did get charged for it. They gave us 1 container of plum sauce for 12 egg rolls- which the egg rolls we're stale & over cooked- they tasted like they had been previously cooked, left out & then re-cooked for our order. We didn't receive the free fried rice we were suppose to get. We called to complain that there was hardly any soup & not enough sauce for the egg rolls & that we didn't get our free fried rice- this is before we realized that they put celery in our food. They came back with just broth for our soups, half a container of freid rice & a tiny little container of plum sauce- not even enough for 2 egg rolls. We spent about $40-45. I threw out the vegetable stiry fry & the egg rolls. Complete waiste of money. I called to let them know that we were disatisfied & all they could say was okay okay, thank you bye bye. Never again.
We did not actually visit the restaurant, but did order out. The service was amazingly quick and the food was delicious. The only criticism I have is that the bbq pork was a bit tough. The Happy Family combination was awesome, as were the ribs. My personal preference were the chicken balls - they were packed with chicken, while the batter was light and crispy. We will definitely call again or visit, if possible. I would certainly recommend Brother Wu to friends and family.
The spring rolls are to die for. they really are the best i've had so far and i tend to order chinese alot. The rest of their food is pretty good but its the standard chinese place. Its still pretty good... love those spring rolls
Little restaurant that serves great food. For the money, is a pretty good value, and you can get some very good chinese food. They could do more to make the location look more desirable, and to make the washroom more accessible. Overall, I'd say to go if you want to enjoy some good chinese food.
