Janine Haller and Krysten Caddy were neighbours who discovered their shared love of fashion while chatting over the back fence. Soon thereafter, the dressmaker and jewellery designer teamed up to open Coal Miner’s Daughter on Markham Street near Bloor and Bathurst. The neighbourhood locals embraced the fledgling fashion venture immediately. The duo, emboldened by their success, opened a second store in the trendy fashion district on West Queen West. Once they’d firmly established the Coal Miner’s Daughter in both neighbourhoods, the pair brought the store to Roncesvalles, where busy moms and youthful fashionistas can now find eclectic pieces to elevate their daily style.

Coal Miner’s Daughter carries Janine and Krysten’s own creations — Janine’s line of ready-to-wear ladies’ fashion and Krysten’s silver and gemstone jewellery — along with a host of other Canadian labels and a couple of exceptional international brands. Their dedication to homegrown talent is based on their mutual love of local fashion design. “The creativity here is amazing,” Janine says. “There’s no need to look anywhere else.”

There’s also a practical consideration. “When you look at brands from LA, their winter stuff is not for winter. Canadians know how to make clothes for Canadians, and Canadian seasons.”
