When Ramona Ruttan opened Vanity Hair Salon back in 1998, there was one main principle guiding her vision: atmosphere. She knew that the decor would change with the decades and so would the hairstyles, but the salon’s environment should always feel the same.
Ramona was determined to make Vanity Hair a warm and friendly place where all of her clients would feel welcome. The experienced stylist had previously worked at a high-end salon in Edmonton where she felt as though the haircutting and styling services were seen as a privilege for clients, not a choice. In an effort to avoid the pretentious attitude found at some upscale salons, Ramona has developed a spirit of inclusivity at her own hair styling studio in Port Coquitlam.
“You know when you walk into a sushi restaurant and everybody says, ‘Hi!’? That’s the kind of atmosphere that I wanted to create...a place where all the staff know all the clients,” Ramona explains. But the savvy salon owner also wants to maintain an air of prestige at the studio, because she knows people are expecting a certain level of service and expertise. “The type of atmosphere we’ve created is very relaxed and yet very professional.”
