When Mohammad Alwarraq and his wife, Fatima Latif, pooled their money to start up a small business, ice cream was the obvious choice. Fatima has a major sweet tooth, so Mohammad decided to give her the ultimate token of love – an ice cream shop she could call her own. “We were spending a lot of money on ice cream so I wanted to get her an ice cream store,” Mohammad says. “She likes ice cream and I like something unique and creative and on the sugary side. And that’s what led us to open up.” The couple put together a business plan and opened up a rolled ice cream store on 17th Avenue called Scrollio Rolled Ice Cream.
Scrollio is a late-night Thai-style rolled ice cream shop featuring fresh ingredients and unlimited toppings. The shop has an adventurous menu of signature creations with fixings that include salted caramel, saffron, macadamia nuts, pear, lychee and more. “Rolled ice cream – specifically – is a new, modern way of making ice cream, and the possibilities are endless with the recipe. You can have a lot of fun with it,” Mohammad says.
Upon entry, Scrollio has a minimalistic aesthetic, with playful touches of décor that include an apothecary jar filled with Fruit Loops and colourful fresh flowers. The shop’s white dining tables and baby blue painted walls are a goldmine for Instagrammers and provide the perfect backdrop for snapping the perfect picture.
