Health trends come and go, but one that’s had a lasting influence is the gluten-free diet. For people with celiac disease, going gluten-free can help keep them healthy and well, but there’s also a portion of the population who believe a gluten-free diet is just a good idea. You can count Terry Wei, owner of Riz North Restaurant, among those in favour. Since she opened her restaurant in 2002 (the second location on Yonge was opened in 2011), she has promoted gluten-free options for her customers and finally converted the kitchen into two, with one section entirely devoted to gluten-free cooking. “I would say gluten-free is one of our main features these days because we are a certified gluten-free establishment,” she shares. “That means we have separate kitchen handling for gluten-free orders to ensure absolutely no cross-contamination whatsoever.” While some restaurants may call themselves gluten-free, Terry went the extra step of having her kitchen certified and regulated because, as she says, “safety is everything.”
